2018 Schedule of Events

MONDAY, JANUARY 15

All Aboard! No need to find your coach or RSVP for transportation service as Visit Salt Lake will provide complimentary light rail tickets. Attendees can ride TRAX from the airport to Salt Lake's downtown area to check into their hotel and register at the convention center. Click here to see the green line's schedule of operation.

UTA TRAX Light Rail
Pick up your complimentary TRAX passes at the Visit Salt Lake/Go West Summit airport desks by baggage claim in both Terminal 1 & Terminal 2. Salt Lake City International Airport volunteer hours include the following:

  • Monday, January 15 – 12pm to 6pm
  • Tuesday, January 16 – 8am to 2pm

**If you arrive outside of the volunteer times, below you will find a few options:

1. UTA TRAX Light rail – Purchase a one-way pass for $2.50 and bring your receipt to the Visit Salt Lake hospitality booth for a refund. You can also pick up a comp pass for your return transfer at the Visit Salt Lake hospitality booth.

2. Uber or Lyft – Costs will range from $10-15 each way. At your own expense.

3. Airport Taxi – Costs will range from $18-25 each way. At your own expense.

Step-by-step directions from Salt Lake City’s airport to the Go West hotels via light rail:

RADISSON 
1. Board a Green Line train towards West Valley. (Trains leave every 15 minutes: 11:42, 11:57, 12:12, etc.). 
2. Disembark at Arena Station (18 minutes). 
3. Walk straight down to the Radisson (you will be able to see it from the station). 

HILTON
1. Board a Green Line train towards West Valley. (Trains leave every 15 minutes: 21:42, 21:57, 22:12, etc.).
2. Disembark at Gallivan Plaza Station (22 minutes).
3. Walk around the block (on Broadway, past the Ruth’s Chris Steak House) to the Hilton.

5:30pm - 7:30pm Buyer Welcome Reception The Colorado Tourism Office invites buyers and media to attend the annual Go West Summit opening reception. The event is hosted by Colorado Tourism. The Colorado delegation representing the entire state will be present to welcome all registered buyers. After the reception: Head out on the town on your own to grab some dinner.


TUESDAY, JANUARY 16

7:00am - 5:30pm Go West Summit Registration Calvin L. Rampton Convention Center

8:00am - 9:00am State Caucus Sessions. Meet with your state's tourism director and other suppliers to discuss international tourism relations. Not every state participates in these meetings; contact your state tourism director to discuss your state's involvement.

9:00am - 4:00pm Buyer Site Tour of the Salt Lake City area. Buyers are invited to start their Go West Summit experience with a tour of Salt Lake's hotel properties and some of the finest attractions. Coaches will pick up at the Hilton City Center Downtown and the Radisson Hotel Salt Lake City Downtown at 9am. The Hilton City Center Downtown is hosting lunch including presentations from Vicki Varela, Managing Director of the Utah Office of Tourism, and Nancy Volmer, Director of Public Relations & Marketing for the Salt Lake City Department of Airports. Enjoy breakfast on your own before the tour, but lunch is included! All registered buyers welcome.

EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS
All educational sessions, meetings, and meals will be held at the Calvin L. Rampton Convention Center

9:30am - 10:30am 2018 International Travel Forecast
This session is designed to help suppliers focus their international promotion efforts in the right markets using the U.S. Department of Commerce’s data. Which countries had the highest inbound-U.S. visitation? To which states did they travel? Did Go West destinations see declines? What does the future hold for international tourism? Presented by Julie Heizer, Deputy Director, Industry Relations, US Department of Commerce.

10:40am - 11:50am Entry Fees, Permits, and Visitor Use Management in the National ParksModerated Panel Discussion. 
Learn how proposed changes to entry fees and commercial use authorization requirements as well as potential reservation systems might affect tourism and conservation in the national park system. Panelists include delegates from the group tour, FIT/fly-drive industry and lodging/attraction properties, as well as a National Park Service representative. Let’s work together to address overcrowding and budget shortfalls.

The internet has changed the way we do business with tour operators and international consumers. Florian Herrmann, CEO of Herrmann Global will present simple tactics you can apply to strengthen your relationship with international travelers and tour operators.

1:30pm - 2:30pm Cultural Heritage Travelers - A Trendy Way to Get Personal
Can your destination offer the ultimate in personalized travel for international travelers? Come learn how the ethnic neighborhoods of Los Angeles, the Basque culture in Boise, and the Irish heritage in Butte are setting the bar for the ultimate in personalization for cultural heritage travelers. 2:40pm - 3:30pm Destination Collaboration
Online collaboration can create a rising tide for everyone in a destination. In this session, DMO’s will learn how to effectively promote lodging, Lodging Providers will learn how to reduce dependency on OTA’s with the help of their DMO, and Tour Operators will learn how they can grow revenue through partnership with DMO’s and Lodging Providers. Presented by Lisa Lilly, Blizzard Internet Marketing.

2:40pm - 3:30pm Unfair Competition and Illegal Practices Affecting and Threatening American Businesses as well as the Integrity of the Entire Industry
Have you wondered why, even though you are seeing coach after coach of Chinese travelers visit America's various popular attractions, you just can't seem to have success in earning their business? This session sheds light on the possible reasons why your efforts in packaged tours, hotels, coaches or any other travel service might be fruitless. Presented by Harry Chen, General Manager, Joy Holiday Corporation.

Understanding the role and value of a receptive tour operator and how you can work together to reach international visitors. Presented by Peter van Berkel, President, Travalco.

3:40pm - 4:30pm Storytelling and Amplification via Social, Content & Influencers
Connect with your audience, build your brand and drive results. Presented by Carly Webber, Director of Social Media, Volume Nine; Crystal Stewart, Vice President, Booyah Advertising.

4:40pm - 5:15pm How-To-Summit
Increase your chances of a successful summit! Learn everything from presenting your business card, to creative appointment tips. This session covers the basics of navigating Go West Summit. Presented by Barbara Bowman, Grand Junction
VCB and Lena Ross, America 4 You

6:30pm - 9:00pm Welcome Dinner - Natural History Museum of Utah Kick off the Go West Summit at one of Utah’s premier museums, and a fantastic introduction to the state. This private evening will include tours of the iconic Dinosaur’s exhibit, Utah’s Geology, Native American’s and more. Featuring local farm to table creations from LUX Catering, High West Whiskey, Sugarhouse Distillery, and Five Wives Vodka. Live performances and demonstrations by Native American’s from This is the Place Heritage Park and views of the entire Salt Lake Valley. Coaches will pick up at the Hilton City Center Downtown and the Radisson Hotel Salt Lake City Downtown beginning at 6:00pm. They will be will looping continuously throughout the evening with the last coach departing at 9pm.  All GWS Registrants Welcome!

8:00am - 8:55am Speed Appointment Session. Suppliers meet with buyers during these 5-minute non-scheduled appointments. Cash giveaway raffle for participating buyers!

9:00am - 12:00pm Marketplace I. This is the first of four marketplace sessions featuring 12-minute, one-on-one, pre-scheduled appointments.

5:45pm Temple Square - Special performance from the World Famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir! Learn more hereAll GWS Registrants Welcome! 

Closing Dinner Temple Square: Join us for heavy appetizers, refreshments and a tour of the LDS Conference Center. Following the reception, walk through Temple Square to the Tabernacle for a Private VIP performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir! The choir rarely offers private performances so you will not want to miss this opportunity. Squatters Pub & Brewery: A Salt Lake City downtown must-do with 10+ local beers on tap, heavy hot appetizers, live music, brewery tours and education tastings with brew master, Jason Stock. Coaches will pick up at the Hilton City Center Downtown and the Radisson Hotel Salt Lake City Downtown at 5:45pm and drop off the LDS Convention Center Door 8. After the tabernacle choir performance, coaches will pick up attendees at the Temple Square West Gate at 7:30pm and then proceed to Squatter’s Brewery. Guests are invited to walk if the weather cooperates.  All GWS Registrants Welcome! 


FRIDAY, JANUARY 19

ADVENTURE DAY 

All GWS Registrants Welcome! All trips depart from the Hilton and Radisson and return to those same host hotels. Be sure to check in at the Salt Lake City welcome desk to confirm your participation and pick-up time.
